Antiguo Edificio Municipal (Old Town Hall), Limon

The Old Town Hall of Limón stands as an architectural gem in the heart of the city. Built in 1942, this brick neoclassical structure showcases the design talents of two notable figures: engineer Rogelio Pardo, who designed the intricate floor layout, and architect José María Barrantes Monge, whose concept for the building's façade reflects his signature style seen throughout the Central Valley. The structure is designed in a "U" shape, featuring brick masonry with elegant neoclassical elements, steel trusses repurposed from Limón's first market in 1893, and beautifully arched windows that add to its historical charm.

The entrance to the Old Town Hall is particularly striking, marked by a statue of Pablo Presbere, a Talamancan leader celebrated for his resistance in defense of indigenous communities in the 1700s. Declared a national hero, his statue serves as a reminder of Costa Rica's rich cultural history and the legacy of its indigenous peoples. Over the years, gardens have been added around the building, further enhancing its aesthetic appeal and providing a serene environment for visitors.

Recognized for its architectural significance, the Old Town Hall was declared a site of historical and architectural heritage on July 26, 2002.

Originally inhabited by indigenous communities, the region remained largely untouched during colonial times—its dense forests, humid climate, and firm local resistance kept it at the margins of Spanish interest for centuries.
