Catedral Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Sacred Heart Cathedral), Limon (must see)

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral is an architectural masterpiece and a beacon of resilience for the local community. Originally built in 1892 as the first Catholic church in Limón, the cathedral has evolved dramatically over the years. Following the devastating earthquake of 1991, the old structure suffered significant damage. Efforts to restore it were unsuccessful, leading to the conception of a new, modern cathedral—a symbol of faith and community strength. Supported by the Friends of the Diocese of Limón Association, local residents, businesses, government, and international aid, the project came to life, resulting in the stunning structure that stands today.

The new cathedral, designed by the renowned Mexican architect Raúl Goddard, is a testament to contemporary design infused with spiritual significance. Goddard's signature use of exposed concrete and wide, open spaces is evident in the design, which notably lacks internal columns. This intentional choice eliminates physical barriers, creating an expansive area for worship and community gatherings. The cathedral's decoration features antique stained glass, merging elements of historical beauty with modern innovation. Sculptor Jimenez Deredia contributed to the spiritual ambiance with a unique crucifix representing the Holy Trinity, symbolizing human transformation and the enduring connection between art and faith.

Although the new cathedral is a marvel of modern architecture, it retains a link to its past through its historic bell tower. This structure, a remnant of the original cathedral, still operates with a computerized system that allows the chimes to be programmed, blending tradition with technology.

Originally inhabited by indigenous communities, the region remained largely untouched during colonial times—its dense forests, humid climate, and firm local resistance kept it at the margins of Spanish interest for centuries.
