Edificio de Correos (Post Office Building), Limon

The Post Office Building in Limón is an architectural gem that has stood the test of time since its construction in 1911. Initially owned by Miiridge, of Jewish descent, the building showcases a blend of neocolonial and neoclassical styles, subtly integrated with Art Nouveau elements. Designed by architect Cesar Rivaflecha, its layout features a distinctive U-shaped floor plan with a central patio accessible through interior corridors on both levels. The structure is framed with thick iron beams and encased in a sturdy brick exterior, highlighting the architectural prowess of its time.

The building was originally purposed for commercial use on the first floor and residential living on the second. Its facade is adorned with 15 large doors on the ground level and an equal number of forged iron balconies on the upper floor. The Corinthian arched pilasters and Art Nouveau decorations, featuring polychrome plaster motifs symbolizing railroads and shipping, add a unique artistic touch.

Throughout its history, the Post Office Building has served many roles. In the 1950s, it became a hub for the Judicial Court System, the Mayor's Office, and the Police Agency. The 1960s saw it repurposed for JAPDEVA offices, the Rural Guard, and the New School. Since 1973, it has been dedicated to housing the Post and Telegraph Department, continuing its legacy as a central point of communication for the community. Recognized for its architectural and historical significance, it was declared a historical and architectural heritage site on November 5, 1981.
