Funivia Mazzaro-Taormina (Mazzaro-Taormina Cableway), Taormina

The Mazzarò–Taormina Cableway whisks passengers from the hilltop town to the sunlit shores of Mazzarò Bay in just under two minutes. Its upper station sits only a short walk from Umberto Street, creating a seamless and scenic link between Taormina’s historic heart and the sea. The system uses a modern single-rope design, operating with two groups of four cabins—each accommodating up to eight people—and can transport roughly 650–680 passengers per hour, with departures about every 15 minutes.

More than a practical shortcut, the ride is a brief aerial journey over dramatic cliffs, olive groves, and the sparkling Ionian Sea. With its smooth operation and panoramic views, it’s often praised as an easy, enjoyable, and efficient way to avoid steep climbs or crowded buses.

Just outside Taormina’s Messina Gate, the cable car offers a quick escape to Mazzarò’s beaches and the celebrated Beautiful Island. Large-windowed gondolas travel in two groups of four, gliding around 100 feet above the ground and offering sweeping views of the coastline, the ancient town, and the surrounding landscape.

The line’s history dates back to 1928, with at least three major renovations since it first opened. Stretching about 2,230 feet, the route now carries over a million passengers annually. With trips departing every quarter of an hour, it’s a quick and memorable way to connect Taormina’s cultural charm with its coastal beauty—so bring a camera for the ride.
