Muelle de Chocolate (Chocolate Pier), Progreso

The Chocolate Pier is a scenic wooden and concrete pier with a unique history and vibrant atmosphere. Its name pays tribute to the Solidarity Route of Chocolate, the first transatlantic sailing race that connected the French ports of Nantes and Saint-Nazaire with Progreso. The pier begins with a wooden walkway and transitions into a concrete structure, offering visitors a beautiful perspective over the Gulf of Mexico. On October 19, 2011, it famously withstood an impact from the 40-meter barge “Noh Cheem” without sustaining damage—an event that highlighted its solid construction.

A walk along the Chocolate Pier offers more than just ocean breezes and sea views—it’s also home to engaging art and photo opportunities. One highlight is the Connected Monument, featuring three sculpted figures sitting on a bench immersed in their mobile devices, with space beside them for visitors to join in for a selfie. Just before the concrete section begins, you’ll spot a giant fish sculpture—a favorite among kids and photographers alike. From the pier, you can also enjoy panoramic views of Progreso’s beach and its iconic pier with arches.

In the late afternoon, the pier becomes especially charming as the sun sets over the water, painting the sky in warm hues. Locals and tourists alike often stroll here while savoring a traditional marquesita filled with queso de bola (Edam cheese). This final stretch of the pier, leading toward the fishermen's wharf, is known as El Deck. It features food stalls, shaded tables, and lounge chairs—plus the colorful “PROGRESO” sign, perfect for vacation snapshots.
