Museo del Meteorito (Meteorite Museum), Progreso
The Meteorite Museum, officially known as The Origin of New Life, opened its doors on July 22, 2022, and quickly became one of Progreso鈥檚 most exciting attractions. Located along the scenic boardwalk, this interactive museum blends science, history, and cutting-edge technology to tell the story of our planet鈥檚 past. Designed for both locals and visitors, the museum offers a 30-minute guided experience for groups of 25, featuring immersive video mapping and digital displays that trace the journey of life from the Big Bang to the age of humans. At the heart of the exhibit is the Chicxulub meteorite impact, which caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and led to the formation of the Yucat谩n鈥檚 unique cenote system.
The museum features several themed rooms such as the Big Bang Room, Meteorite Room, Minute Zero, and Walking with Dinosaurs, each using augmented reality, robotics, and interactive tablets to bring prehistoric life to vivid reality. Visitors can explore fossil evidence, ancient rocks, and animatronic dinosaurs like the T-Rex, Triceratops, Spinosaurus, and Dilophosaurus. One popular activity is designing your own dinosaur via digital platforms, offering both educational and entertaining experiences for all ages.
