Plaza Justo Rufino Barrios, Guatemala City
Plaza Justo Rufino Barrios is a historic square represented by its statue of General Justo Rufino Barrios, who served as president from 1873 to 1885 and earned the title “The Reformer” for spearheading liberal reforms that modernized the country. The bronze monument, originally erected in 1897, was relocated here after surviving the devastating 1917–18 earthquakes.
Flanking the plaza are several noteworthy landmarks. To one side stands the Railway Museum, which once functioned as the city's central railway terminal. Nearby lies the charming National Typography Museum, housed in a heritage yellow edifice, and the Baroque-style Parish of Our Lady of Remedies, distinguishable by its graceful golden dome. Visitors will also notice the Transmetro station—Guatemala City's modern rapid bus network.
Plaza Barrios thrives as a social and cultural crossroads, where street vendors, local shoppers, and commuters converge amid the plaza’s open paved spaces. It offers tourists a snapshot of daily Guatemalan life—an ideal place to pause for photos, sample street food, or simply enjoy the surrounding historical architecture and public art.
