Wisconsin Historical Museum, Madison

The Wisconsin Historical Museum, undergoing a major transformation as it evolves into the new Wisconsin History Center, has served as the Wisconsin Historical Society’s main venue for exploring the state’s diverse heritage, offering four levels of exhibitions that traced Wisconsin’s story from prehistoric times to the present.

Highlights included displays on Native Nations, early European immigration, agriculture, industry, and grassroots political movements. Visitors encountered immersive dioramas, recreated historical settings like a 19th-century general store and logging camp, and thematic displays on everyday artifacts—from ice cream cartons and kitchen appliances to aluminum Christmas trees. Special exhibitions delved into topics like Hmong history, women’s suffrage, and beloved Wisconsin traditions.

During its transition into a bigger center, the Society operates a temporary venue—the History Maker Space, featuring rotating mini-exhibits, author talks, K–12 activities, and a retail space with Wisconsin-themed gifts and books. The Society also brings history directly to communities statewide through the mobile History Makers Tour, ensuring that Wisconsin’s stories remain accessible and engaging while the new center takes shape.
