Wisconsin Veterans Museum, Madison

Wisconsin Veterans Museum, Madison (must see)

The Wisconsin Veterans Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate and part of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, is an acclaimed institution that provides guided exhibits highlighting the experiences of Wisconsin residents who served in the military from the Civil War to modern-day operations.

The museum is organized around two permanent galleries that chronicle Wisconsin veterans’ military service across centuries. The 19th Century Gallery takes you into the Civil War era, featuring an impressive diorama of the Battle of Antietam, original battle flags, and artifacts from the Spanish–American and Philippine Wars—bringing pivotal moments in state and national history to life.

The 20th Century to Present Gallery explores involvement in World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and ongoing engagements, and includes remarkable displays such as a World War I Sopwith Camel, a WWII P-51 Mustang, and a Vietnam-era Huey helicopter.

In addition to permanent exhibits, the museum regularly features traveling and temporary exhibitions that shine a light on diverse experiences—from WWI veterans’ first-hand accounts to stories of military mascots and women in uniform. The museum also houses a research center and collections, where visitors and historians can explore archives, photographs, and oral histories documenting Wisconsin’s military past.
