Old Ellicott City: More than Just a Historic District, Ellicott City, Maryland

Old Ellicott City (OEC)聽is an old mill town founded by Quaker brothers. It has survived countless floods (including Hurricane Agnes). If you鈥檙e visiting Washington D.C. or Baltimore, schedule a detour to 鈥渢he town with a river and seven hills.鈥�

It reminded me of the historic towns of聽Berkeley Spring, West Virginia聽and聽Beaufort, North Carolina.

I booked the聽Old Ellicott Walking Tour聽to learn more about the town. My guide, Mike Radinsky, was a walking encyclopedia about OEC, including the town鈥檚 founders. The tour lasted two hours. Wear your sneakers because you will walk nearly a mile on the tour. The town is hilly! Capitoline Hill was nicknamed Mount Misery as laborers had to tote granite stones up the hill.

It turns out this 252-year-old town is older than America. Three Quaker brothers鈥擩ohn, Andrew, and Joseph Ellicott鈥攎oved to Maryland from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They bought land adjacent to the Patapsco River. The Ellicotts wanted to build and run grain mills. They named it Ellicott Mills. ......
