During the late 1980s, a vision to move the administrative capital of Kuala Lumpur to an adjacent planned city was visualised by Mahatmir bin Mohammad (Malaysia’s fourth prime minister) in response to Kuala Lumpur’s increasingly congested development.

Finally, following the negotiation between the federal government with the state of Selangor, the land sale pursued and construction for the new administrative capital began in 1995. Costing a grand total of USD 8.1 billion, it was Malaysia’s biggest project and one of Southeast Asia’s largest ones. Finally, in the year of 2001, the city of Putrajaya formally became the seat of the federal government.

The city of Putrajaya is consciously designed to incorporate strong Islamic influences, emulating the aesthetics of legendary cities such as Baghdad and Damascus. As such, a visit to Putrajaya can be a very rewarding journey, especially if you are someone who appreciates excellent architecture.
