I have to admit, I had never thought of Reading as anything more than a stop on the railway line to London, or a convenient base for visitors to the capital. But I was wrong. Combining a rich history with cultural heritage and a riverside location, and within easy reach of Berkshire’s many attractions, Reading has plenty to offer for all types of leisure visitors.

Reading comes as a surprise to visitors. Its location on both the River Thames and the Kennet and Avon Canal makes it a great centre for walks and river cruises. But it also has a long history, evidenced by its medieval Abbey Quarter, the Victorian architecture in the town centre, and the town’s two excellent museums. And there are the literary connections – Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen and Paddington Bear!

Visitors in search of relaxation can enjoy the spa facilities of the historic Thames Lido, and there are shops, restaurants and hotels to enhance your visit. And, of course, Reading’s position in the heart of Berkshire but also close to London, combined with its excellent transport links, makes it an ideal base for exploring the region. ......
