Travel to the coastal city of Toyama for a more tranquil experience and a break from Japan’s larger boisterous cities.

Then Toyama is for you as tourists seem scarce, which is refreshing after spending several nights in incredibly bustling Kyoto.

With a decreasing population of around 413,000, Toyama is a more peaceful and laid-back experience than other Japanese cities.

Seven rivers run from the foot of the mountains in the south to the north of the city, before continuing into the Sea of Japan.

Even though Toyama is more serene than other cities in Japan, this doesn’t mean there is nothing to see in this lovely city and there is always a castle.

Only a 10-minute walk from Toyama Station, you are confronted with the dramatic Toyama Castle Park (Â¥210 entry).

A small pamphlet in English is provided but as the exhibits are in Japanese with a splattering of English titles, it’s not easy to learn about the intricacies of the castle.
