Matsumoto may not be one of the most popular places to go in Japan, but this city in Nagano is no hidden gem either. The most common reason for visiting Matsumoto is to see its original castle; I wanted to visit Matsumoto for this very reason, as I knew just how special its castle is.
Appreciating the city’s charms only takes one or two days in Matsumoto. The city may lack some of the traditional elements you find in destinations like Kyoto or Takayama, but it has its own quirks that draw you in. Let me show you why the scenery, history, and culture kept me happily busy during my Matsumoto stay.
Matsumoto is found in the Nagano prefecture and is probably the second most important city there, after Nagano itself.
International visitors frequently travel through Matsumoto when exploring the region of Chubu, thanks to its convenient location near regional highlights like Kamikochi and the Kiso Valley.
Only a fraction take the time to briefly explore, possibly because they don’t know that Matsumoto Castle is just the start of things to do in Matsumoto.
